Join us at Fighting Words to promote creativity and writing as a powerful form of self-expression!

As a volunteer writing mentor, you will help to facilitate the creativity of the children and young people as they craft their own stories. You'll offer help, advice and encouragement to primary and secondary school students as they work collectively and independently at our workshops. Your time and attention are invaluable in nurturing confidence and unleashing the boundless potential of our workshop participants.

No prior experience? No problem! We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, and rest assured, comprehensive training awaits all successful applicants. All that we are looking for is people who are enthusiastic, have a passion for working creatively, and are interested in working with children and young people. 

There is no minimum time commitment needed to volunteer with us. However, it is worth noting that our workshops generally take place on weekday mornings and afternoons.

Workshops will be held in libraries across Limerick City, but don't worry - you'll never be asked to work hours or travel to venues that do not work for you. Volunteers sign up for workshops via our calendar on our website.

Garda Vetting is required for this role, but it's a simple process that we'll guide you through after you apply. We also provide comprehensive training to ensure you feel confident and prepared every step of the way.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

- Working as part of a team in delivering the workshop.

- Assisting children and/or young with the practical and creative aspects of creative writing.

- Offering advice and encouragement and positive feedback in general.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Details of time commitment needed for role: Weekday mornings and afternoons and occasional weekend opportunities. Volunteering is completely flexible - volunteers choose the days and times they come in using our online calendar. There is no minimum commitment.

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week

Additional screening required for this role:
Additional screening required for this role: All prospective volunteers are required to complete the Fighting Words volunteer application form and attend an informal interview and complete a two-hour training session. Garda vetting is mandatory - but don't worry - we will explain the process and provide the forms!
