VOLUNTEER WITH US

We are looking for volunteers to join us on our fun, inclusive breaks in Galway for people with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.

  • Experience not essential, full training provided
  • Minimum age is 18 years
  • Enthusiasm and a caring nature are a must!
  • Travel, Accommodation and food will be provided by SBHI

Is training provided?: Yes

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position which will be processed with you after you apply.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

  • Encourage & support participants to take part in activities.
  • Promote and facilitate participants’ independence.
  • Assist participants with personal care (i.e. showering, toileting, dressing etc.) where necessary – personal care needs are varied depending on the participant. Participants will tell you what their needs are, and the nursing staff are there for full support and guidance.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of participants.
  • Report to the coordinator.
  • Attend team meetings as required.
  • Help out with kitchen duties as required.

Further information on the role is provided on the training days, which all new volunteers and staff must attend prior to the breaks.  Training also includes Manual/patient handling training and information on the following:  SBHI services, Safeguarding vulnerable adults and child protection, Disability Awareness and Personal Care.

To become a Volunteer with SBHI, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Be a caring, hard-working, responsible and compassionate person

Skills required for this role:

  • Enthusiasm 
  • Outgoing Fun and Caring Nature

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Weekends Friday to Monday Various Dates throughout the year.

Minimum time commitment per week:
10+ hour p/week
