Description

Camp Abilities is a fun-filled event designed for children and young people who are blind or vision impaired. Through sports and physical activities, participants build confidence, learn new skills, and make lasting friendships. The sessions will be lead by professionals and we are looking for volunteers to provide support for the young people during the activities and throughout the day.

The camp runs from the 14th-17th April 2025, volunteers are needed from the 13th April for training. We are looking for volunteers that can stay with us for the five days and a small number of local volunteers who can be there during the day and return home in the evening.

 Volunteering at Camp Abilities is an incredibly rewarding experience. No prior experience in vision impairment is needed, just energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to support these young participants to thrive.

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position which will be processed with you after you apply.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

  • To attend required training.
  • Facilitate and encourage positive peer interactions.
  • Support children’s participation in sports activities such as kayaking, wall climbing, and more.
  • Provide sighted guide assistance to children when moving between locations.
  • Assist staff in maintaining and adhering to the daily schedule.

  • Patience: A calm and understanding approach when supporting children.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to interact with children, peers, and staff.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to respond to changing situations and needs.
  • Empathy: Sensitivity to the needs and experiences of children with vision impairment.
  • Reliability: Commitment to fulfilling assigned tasks and responsibilities

Details of time commitment needed for role:
All day from the 13th-17th April. Majority of volunteers will be provided with local overnight accommodation and a small number who are local will return home in the evenings. Volunteers will not be working in the evenings.

Minimum time commitment per week:
10+ hour p/week

The application process includes completing a form, followed by an interview to discuss your suitability and interest in the role
