Join us at Fighting Words to promote creativity and writing as a powerful form of self-expression!
Together with the Fighting Words Limerick team, you'll help children bring their imagination to life on the page. As a volunteer story illustrator, you'll play a pivotal role in our workshops alongside our team of writing mentors.
We're seeking enthusiastic individuals who have a passion for drawing and love working with children. Whether you're a seasoned illustrator or just starting out, your dedication and creativity are what truly matter: you don't need formal art training to join us.
There is no minimum time commitment needed to volunteer with us. However, it is worth noting that our workshops generally take place on weekday mornings between 10am and 12pm.
Workshops will be held in libraries across Limerick City, but don't worry - you'll never be asked to work hours or travel to venues that do not work for you. Volunteers sign up for workshops via our calendar on our website.
Garda Vetting is required for this role, but it's a simple process that we'll guide you through after you apply. We also provide comprehensive training to ensure you feel confident and prepared every step of the way.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:
Story Illustrators work as part of a team with the wider group of volunteers and the local coordinator.
Story Illustrators provide 1-2 illustrations for stories written by primary school children. They also provide guidance and advice to children for their own drawings.
Story illustrators are welcome to use paper and marker/crayon/pencil or digital drawing software.
Training and support will be provided to all volunteers.
Skills required for this role:
Confidence in your drawing ability, but professional qualifications are not required.
An interest in working with children in a creative environment.
Good listening skills.
Details of time commitment needed for role:
Primary school workshops generally take place in the mornings, so availability is largely required between 10am and 1pm. However, Fighting Words volunteers choose the days they come in using our online calendar, so there's no minimum commitment or required day once you register with us.
Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
Additional screening required for this role:
Prospective volunteers are require to complete the Fighting Words volunteer application form, attend an informal interview, complete a two-hour training session and are subject to Garda vetting. The process is easy and staff will provide help along the way!
