'BBBS' Big Brother Big Sister is an internationally recognised youth mentoring programme that forms supportive friendships for young people inspiring them to brighter futures.
A "Match" refers to the Mentor & Mentee once they have met and agree to keep meeting. Both are brought together based on shared interests, hobbies and personalities, they make decisions together as to what activities they would like to do.
All applicants are carefully screened, receive training and are subject to approval with the programme are provided with support throughout their match with the young person.
The young people live locally, from a variety of backgrounds, and would benefit from developing a friendship with a caring adult outside of their family. Through this friendship adults can inspire young people to their own positive development.
We are currently looking for volunteers to act as mentors. Successful adult volunteers are asked to share one to two hours a week with the young person they are matched with. The initial commitment requested is for one year.
Is training provided?: Yes
Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position which will be processed with you after you apply.
Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:
Meeting with a young person in the community, sharing their time and experience with the young person, and to be a positive role model in the young persons life.
To make a positive difference in the lives of young people through a professionally supported one-to-one relationship.
Doing activities of a shared interest with the young person, e.g. Going for a walk, going for a coffee, cinema, playing football.
Skills required for this role:
Good communication skills, enthusiasm, motivation, patience, empathy, reliability, interest and belief in mentoring young people.
Details of time commitment needed for role:
1 to 2 Hours per week - organisable between the Volunteer and Young person - initial commitment for 1 year.
Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
