Description

As the name suggests, students pledge just 3 hours of their time and will work alongside Tuatha Volunteers of Terryland Forest Park in a wide range of activities such as tree and flower planting, clean-ups or giving tours. Volunteers can even get involved in scientific research depending on their interests/background.

This small but meaningful pledge aims to inspire students with a real sense of place among the community of Galway as well as an increased awareness of the importance of biodiversity in urban environments. Added benefits include meeting new people, getting fresh air and having fun!

Officially known as the ‘Lungs of the City’ since its inception in 2000, the publicly owned Terryland Forest Park was the largest urban neighbourhood native tree forest project in the history of the Irish state when it opened to the public for the first time that year.

Initiated as a result of years of campaigning by residents’ groups, in the mid-1990s circa 180 acres were zoned by Galway Corporation (now Galway City Council) for a new woodland and riverine park in what was previously pasture. The project continues to represent a wonderful proactive partnership between local government, state agencies, third level colleges, schools, environmentalists and other NGOs.

As well as being a people’s park for recreational activities, Terryland Forest Park has become a unique urban wildlife sanctuary in a developing temperate rainforest and used as an outdoor classroom and outdoor lab by schools and colleges. Approximately 100,000 native Irish trees and tens of thousands of wildflowers have been planted by the people, schools, students and council staff of Galway city, creating an expansive mosaic of multiple wildlife habitats for a wide variety of flora and fauna located close to the city centre.
