Description

Community Volunteers, managed by Cork Volunteer Centre, is a team of trained volunteers ready to support community events and respond to local emergencies. Upon applying, volunteers receive training in essential skills for event support. After training, you can choose from a calendar of one-off opportunities, including community festivals, environmental projects, and emergency assistance as needed.

Shifts vary in length, with a maximum of four hours. Past events include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Carnival of Science, Joy in the Park, beach cleanups, and tree planting initiatives. All welcome!

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

At Events:

  • Welcoming Attendees: Greeting and assisting people as they arrive, ensuring they feel welcomed and informed about the event.
  • Directing People: Guiding attendees to key locations, such as entrances, stages, or seating areas, ensuring smooth crowd flow.
  • Providing Event Information: Offering information about the event schedule, locations of facilities (e.g., bathrooms, food stalls), and answering general queries to enhance the event experience.
  • Supporting Event Logistics: Helping with setting up or packing down event spaces, distributing materials, or assisting with registration/check-ins as needed.

At Environmental Projects:

  • Beach Cleanups: Collecting and properly disposing of litter and debris along beaches, contributing to a cleaner environment.
  • Community Cleanups: Supporting local initiatives to tidy parks, streets, and other public spaces, fostering a cleaner and more attractive community.
  • Tree and Shrub Plantings: Assisting with planting trees and shrubs in designated areas, helping to improve green spaces and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Skills required for this role:

  • Communication Skills:

    • Ability to clearly communicate with event attendees, team members, and the public.
    • Friendly and approachable demeanor to create a positive experience for participants.
    • Ability to provide clear directions and information.
  • Teamwork:

    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with fellow volunteers and event staff.
    • Flexibility to assist wherever needed during events or projects.
  • Interest in Community Engagement:

    • A genuine desire to contribute to community well-being, both through event support and environmental conservation efforts.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
The events take place on both weekdays and weekends, allowing you to choose the ones that fit your schedule. You can sign up for as many or as few shifts as you'd like.

Minimum time commitment per week:
4 hour p/week
