Description

Trócaire will have a charity hut at the Galway Christmas market from Friday 6th until Thursday 12th December 2024.

The main tasks will be to give information to the public on our Christmas Gifts of Change and on our Christmas campaign, which aims to bring comfort to children suffering through war. The volunteer will chat to the public about people that Trócaire supports overseas and how that support makes a difference in their lives.

We will offer the public the opportunity to support people's employment by buying arts and crafts made by people supported by Trócaire's partners.

Christmas Ornaments from Bethlehem, Palestine will be on sale. Trócaire ordered these ornaments, through Sr Bridget Tighe, from two workshops that employed 15-20 people. The impact of these workshops is very important. The people of Bethlehem have lost all sources of income due to the war, people who were dependant on pilgrims and tourism. The olive wood ornament production first of all gives great encouragement to the employees; it gives them income and it gives them dignity.
There will also be crafts from the Ku Mbewu Centre for Family Development, Malawi. Women produce their own crafts, sell them and benefit from various classes such as permaculture. The materials for the crafts are locally sourced and sustainable.
The volunteer may give information to the public on how to purchase the arts and crafts and the gifts. They may sell some gifts, and/or or accept donations through Trócaire's sealed donation box.
